Scene Navigator

Jump between scenes and see your script's structure at a glance.

Opening the Navigator

Open the Navigator from View > Navigator. It appears as a side panel on the left.

Scenes Tab

The Scenes tab lists every scene heading in your screenplay in order. Each entry shows:

Click any scene to instantly jump to that scene in the editor. This is the fastest way to navigate a long screenplay.

💡

Tip: The Navigator updates in real-time as you add, remove, or change scene headings. It always reflects the current state of your screenplay.

Locations Tab

The Locations tab groups your scenes by location. For example, all scenes at "COFFEE SHOP" are grouped together, regardless of whether they're INT. or EXT., DAY or NIGHT.

This is useful for:

Click any scene within a location group to jump to it in the editor.

For more on the Locations feature, including batch renaming, see Locations.

Scene Numbers

Scene numbers appear alongside each scene heading, both in the Navigator panel and in the editor. They are essential for production scripts.

Show/Hide Scene Numbers

Toggle scene number visibility via Tools > Production > Show Scene Numbers. When enabled, scene numbers appear on both sides of each scene heading in the editor.

Lock Scene Numbers

Once scene numbers are finalized for production, use Tools > Production > Lock Scene Numbers to prevent them from changing when scenes are added, removed, or reordered. Locked scene numbers remain fixed even as the script evolves.

💡

When to lock: Lock scene numbers after the script has been distributed to the production team. This ensures everyone references the same scene numbers regardless of future edits.
