Script Notes
Attach annotations, reminders, and reference material to your screenplay.
Opening Script Notes
Open the Script Notes panel from View > Script Notes. Notes appear in a panel alongside the editor.
Creating a Note
- Select the text in your screenplay that you want to annotate.
- In the Script Notes panel, click + New Note.
- Type your note text.
- The note is anchored to the selected text — it stays connected even as you edit the script around it.
Note Colors
Notes are color-coded to help you organize different types of annotations:
| Color | Suggested Use |
|---|---|
| ● Yellow | General reminders and to-dos |
| ● Red | Issues or problems to fix |
| ● Blue | Research notes or references |
| ● Green | Approved or completed notes |
| ● Orange | Feedback from collaborators |
| ● Purple | Creative ideas or alternatives |
Click the color indicator on a note to change its color.
Embedding Media
Script notes can include more than just text. You can embed:
- Images — Reference photos, mood boards, location scouting images.
- Videos — Paste YouTube or Vimeo URLs for reference clips.
- Asset references — Use the
@AssetNamesyntax to link to assets in your project's Asset Manager.
Filtering Notes
When you have many notes, use the filter options to narrow down what you see:
- By color — Show only notes of a specific color (e.g., just the "red" issues).
- By element type — Show only notes attached to specific element types (e.g., just notes on dialogue).
- By scene context — Show notes for the current scene or a specific scene.
Note Visibility
Toggle note highlighting in the editor via View > Note Highlights. When enabled, annotated text is highlighted with the note's color. When disabled, the text looks normal but notes are still accessible from the panel.
Tip: Turn off note highlights when you want to read the script cleanly, or before printing/exporting to PDF. Notes are never included in exports.
